Library of Congress on Wheels

A few weeks ago an eighteen wheel truck came through Greenville carrying several small exhibitions on The Library of Congress. The exhibition is called, Gateway To Knowledge. I lived six years in Washington DC and never once did I visit The library of Congress--for that I could kick myself in the bottom! The exhibitions tells how Thomas Jefferson started the library and some of the exhibitions you will see are:

1. 1507 Waldseemuller Map
2. 1455 Gutenberg Bible
3. Declaration of Independence(rough draft)
4. 1962 drawings for the comic books Spider
5. Leaves of Grass by Walt Whitman.

There are also several computers the public can use to look up information on The Library of Congress(web site).

If you have a chance to visit this great exhibition I would highly recommend it. Also, if you are in the Washington DC area take time to visit the library-do not be like me and put if off.

More Snow

The Upstate of South Carolina got more snow that started early Monday morning. When it was all over Greenville got between 7 to 8 inches and maybe more in certain areas. I had to leave for work around 5.00AM and the snow was still coming down--it was so pretty to see. Husband thought I was crazy taking pictures outside so early in the morning!

I can never remember getting snow within weeks apart(Greenville had a White Christmas). To tell you the truth, I do hope this is the end for the snow. Yes, it is nice to have snow but when you have to go to work early in the morning it can become a problem-the roads and walking in the slippery stuff is no fun for me. I am looking forward to Spring and Summer!

Mail Art

I have a new hobby and it is called--mail art. You might ask yourself, what is mail art? Let me share my definition with you.  Mail art is taking what you have(recycle paper items, ect..) and create a letter and envelope with art. I have saved everything from magazines, Starbucks coffee holders, old stamps and I went to city hall and got everything on Greenville I could take!! The sweet man working that day just looked at me and laughed after I asked for a bag. I told him I was sending art mail to several countries and was sharing my city with new friends--he smiled and seem happy. :)

I have received letters from Australia, Hawaii, Japan, Ohio and Alabama and have shared a lot about Greenville to people I have sent mail art to. I have learned a lot about the area where my letters have come from and have made friends I hope will visit Greenville in the near future. We have a blog where we post out letters and share with other members all we can about mail art. I am very happy to be part of this group and I am learning so much.

Computers are a good thing, but I think it's sad to see the art of  letter writing becoming a thing of the past. I love receiving a nice hand written letter in my post box more than receiving an e-mail.
